Dancers Lead at State

A delegation of 100 ballroom dancers from Brownsville ISD earned 2nd place at the State Texarama Ballroom Competition held in Galveston, Texas on Friday, September 14. This was Brownsville’s first time to participate. The BISD students competed against hundreds of couples from the Houston area and as far away as Arizona and Colorado. Ten styles of dance were included in the competition, waltz, foxtrot, tango, Viennese waltz, rumba, chacha, swing, salsa, samba, and merengue. Brownsville’s dancers were the audience favorites. A total of 24 BISD campuses were represented at Texarama: Benavides, Champion, Egly, Ortiz, Paredes, Pullam, Skinner, Villa Nueva, and Yturria Elementary Schools; Cummings, Garcia, Lucio, Manzano, Oliveira, Perkins, Stell, Stillman and Vela Middle Schools; Hanna, Lopez, Pace, Porter, Rivera, and Veterans Memorial High Schools. BISD’s ballroom dancers have already achieved well-deserved recognition at the local level. Now, their skills have brought statewide success. Congratulations to our outstanding ballroom students and their teachers.
