5 BISD High Schools Approved for Early College

It’s official! Texas Commissioner of Education Michael Williams has announced that five Brownsville ISD high schools, Hanna, Pace, Lopez, Rivera, and Veterans Memorial, have received Early College High School (ECHS) designations for the 2014-2015 school year. The announcement came on Monday, February 24. BISD received the largest number, earning 5 of the 44 new ECHS designations. The district already has one ECHS with the Brownsville Early College High School located at the University of Texas-Brownsville campus. Texas now has a total of 109 ECHS campuses across the state. “We are thrilled with this news. Five new early college high schools will offer opportunities to our Brownsville ISD students like never before. Our entire community will reap the benefits from these local high schools that allow students to earn substantial college hours and a high school diploma at the same time,” said Superintendent Dr. Carl A.
