STAMP Meetings

Students who have been accepted into the new STAMP College Preparatory Program and their parents must attend one of two important meetings at the Veterans Memorial High School auditorium on March 27-28 to learn about the required summer programs, transportation services, and course selections. Middle School Choirs Rock

BISD middle school choir directors and their students earned judges’ accolades at the UIL Choir Concert and Sightreading Contest held on March 5 and 6. Congratulations on their fine efforts.

The March 19, 2013, Regular BISD Board Meeting has been cancelled, due to scheduled holidays. The next Regular Board Meeting is scheduled to be held on Tuesday, April 2, 2013 in the BISD Administration Boardroom.

Garza Selected Coach of the Year

Brownsville, Tx.) – After leading his team to the Region IV-5A Tournament this past weekend, Brownsville Porter Head Coach Luis Garza was selected as the Coach of the Year for the All-South High School Sports Magazine Team. “This feels gratifying and I am very happy hearing this news,” said Garza. “All of the hard work year in and year out has finally paid off.” The Cowboys made school history as they went to the Class 5A Regional Tournament after defeating State Ranked McAllen Rowe 67-51 in the Regional Quarterfinals. Porter accumulated an impressive 33-6 overall record and their magical season ended against San Antonio Brandeis

2012 Alliance/Merck Scholars

Three 2012 BISD graduates have been selected to receive Alliance/Merck Ciencia Scholarships for college as well as summer internship stipends. The recipients are Elisia J. Campos, a graduate of Rivera High School; George A. Garcia, a graduate of Lopez High School; and Ruben Santos, a graduate of Porter High School. The awards mark the fourth round of Alliance/Merck Scholarships for Hispanic students pursuing STEM careers. The scholarships are awarded to students in Brownsville, Texas; Elizabeth, New Jersey; and Los Angeles, California.

BISD Migrant Students Are Tops

Seven BISD students earned recognition in the 2013 Exemplary Migrant Students Program sponsored by The University of Texas in Austin. A total of 40 Texas students will be honored during the 26th Migrant Student Recognition Ceremony to be held in Austin on April 15. The students were selected based on academic achievement, participation in extracurriculuar and community activities, overcoming obstacles, and performance in earning high school credits through distance learning.
